MoMA to feature 14 games in new exhibit - EVE included!

Postby Voronwe Eldalom » Sun Dec 09, 2012 1:40 am

The Museum of Modern Art in NYC is putting together an exhibit of 14 games (to be later expanded to 40) that are significant for artistic, design or cultural reasons.

One of these 14 is Eve Online, and CCP is asking all active capsuleers to help participate in making their portion of the exhibit by logging in today, December 9th and recording your regular exploits for submission. They're going to be putting together a 5-10 minute long "day in the life" video showcasing player metrics for the day and in-game footage by players. They want both mundane and exciting stuff, voice chatter included.

The other 13 games starting off the exhibit are:
• Pac-Man (1980)
• Tetris (1984)
• Another World (1991)
• Myst (1993)
• SimCity 2000 (1994)
• vib-ribbon (1999)
• The Sims (2000)
• Katamari Damacy (2004)
• Dwarf Fortress (2006)
• Portal (2007)
• flOw (2006)
• Passage (2008)
• Canabalt (2009)

Should get some pictures from the old UI; those belong in a museum.

How is EQ not on there? I haven't heard of 1/2 of the rest of those.

I didn't recognize Another World, vib-ribbon, Dwarf Fortress, Passage or Cannabalt, but of those I did recognize, I can see why they picked them. I think Eve beat EQ for the first MMOG spot because it's a more evolved form of the genre, and better showcases what can be done with the framework established by EQ and the other first genners. Plus, it's more unique. EQ's claim to fame can arguably be equally applied to UO, and to a lesser extent, AC. EVE stands alone as a sandbox with real market forces complete with virtual grand larceny, and wars involving thousands of players.

Of course, as one of those people who'd argue for Asheron's Call against EQ, I may be biased. :D

vib-ribbon, Katamari Damacy, flOw, Passage, Canabalt - havnt heard of any of them myself. I too cant believe that EQ didnt make the cut, its changed the world of mmorpg's forever, ultima online maybe hit a few K users, EQ was the first to hit over a million subs or at least half a mil subs. EQ came out before AC, not by much more then a year and half, but far long enough.

Browsing dubious websites on the in game browser is not considered interesting for this exhibition, although you may find it profoundly interesting and make personal discoveries doing so.

lol... <3 CCP devs sometimes.

Actually had a GM message me yesterday on my trial account and asked if I needed help with anything, then talked with me for a while once I said I'd started my first account in '06. Was pretty impressed.

Also, <3 Dwarf Fortress

If you have not played Katamari Domacy you missed a lot of silly fun, can be difficult to find these days (only 2 on Amazon right now from a 3rd party) but Katamari Forever is a PS3 sequel to the original with some new features for added fun.

EVE is a beautiful game, that's prob the main reason I played as long as I did(almost a whole month!). Unlocking shiny new ships was fun. If only flying them was.
